Thank you to all who stopped by at our Union Square fair. It was an interesting experience!

There was a woman who came and bought a pack of Strawberry Marshmallows and despite a great resolve, opened the pack right there and popped one in her mouth! Another asked us to hope that she did not open the pack she had bought till she reached home:). Yet another woman bought marshmallows which she said she would allow to get stale because she liked them better with hot chocolate when they didn’t quickly melt into the chocolate!

All our pistachio-cardamom biscotti was sold out too! Not to mention all our samples were eagerly devoured even by those that look down upon sugar and butter.

Hope you enjoyed all our products as much as we enjoyed making them.

October 18, 2009! What a day!

We woke up to a dull, sunless, wet morning. Goodies in hand, and hope in our hearts, we set out in Pia’s car from our homes in Queens to the big city! As we got there we realized, it was no longer chilly but very cold and the raindrops got bigger all the time. We were between 88th and 89th streets and we had all of 6 or 8 stores on our block…because most vendors decided not to set up at all!

Yup, we had never been to a street fair where vendors who have already put down payment for stalls, decided not to set up. As we went along, the wind got worse and the Clearview Festivals guys came along to say that the winds were to get worse and to check whether we were adequately reinforced. A large pumpkin did it for us. We were safe under our sturdy tent.

At 11:30 a.m. I was ready to go back home (because traffic was slow and more importantly, I was dressed for 45 degree F and it had already dropped to 36 degree F). But thankfully, traffic did pick up and we ended up staying till 5:00 p.m. Also, did a decent bit of business.

Products that sold out were: Pandan and Chocolate Marshmallows, Pumpkin Cheesecake with Gingerbread on a stick and the Cheesecake with Lemon Curd and Sponge Cake base.
The brownies did well, as always! They are becoming a solid cash cow.
The winner in the ‘Sooo Cute!’ product category was the Cupcake in a Jar

Many people came out to encourage the ‘brave’ few who set up their stalls. Others were happy have our samples that put smiles on their faces in the bad weather! Thank you so much for stopping by! It did put a bright spot in our day.

Many persons asked us about where we will be next, the answer is Union Square. Watch out for the bright pink banner. Hope to see you there!

What a day! The warmest day of the previous week and the following week as well! Of course, we weren’t the only ones that noticed, all those that came to the street fair thought so too!

It was an overwhelming response! We were on our feet setting up at 10:00 a.m. and the first time any of us sat down was 4:00 p.m.! Each time we put out samples of our products they were gone! At times we had people waiting in line to get the samples being put out. It was wonderful to be appreciated, some with kind comments and finger licking, others with patronage. Thank you all for stopping by! Do remember we are home based and that is why we are able to bring you fresh products that have the healthy taste and warmth of homemade goodies! We are a phone call and a website away from, so the next time you are going to dinner and need to take something with you, think of us and you can carry a truly delightful treat to enhance the pleasure of the evening!

Back to the fair, as always, the best response was to the marshmallows and brownies. Our cheesecakes and cupcakes did quite well too, what with the new interesting flavors! For those who did not want something too sweet, our biscotti really took the cookie! Quite a few adults bought those. We had a large number of requests for sugar free desserts and are looking into those. We should update the site with the products that we come up with…watch out for other posts!

All in all, we enjoyed ourselves, I hope you did too! Let us know what else you would like to see…..

Oh! we will also be at street fairs at 92nd and Lexington Avenue on October 18 and at Union Square on November 1. Hope to see you there.

We are soon to be at a new location – the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Christmas Fair in Forest Hills, Queens, New York. While we will continue to stock our super popular items – Vanilla Fleur-de-Sel Caramels, Vanilla and Chocolate Marshmallows and Dark Chocolate Fantasy Brownies; we are also experimenting with new seasonal favorites like petite fours, flavored butter cookies, new flavors for marshmallows, caramels and brownies.

We would love to hear what other people think about seasonal flavors. Do people want to enjoy the flavors of pumpkin, apple, cinnamon, pomeogranate, cranberry while they are in season? Or would they rather be reminded of spring with a honey-lavender splash or a raspberry tingle? Or be taken even further into summer with the smells and tastes of mango, watermelon, passion fruit? Someone please speak up, even it is Father Christmas!

Another question for fair veterans or just any one who wants to share some insight into consumer behaviour – Would you, in the holiday season, rather buy a single helping of brownies or do you think you would prefer to have a brownie sampler to share with friends and family or better still, gift to your loved ones?

Just some musings while cooking up a new set of treats. Watch this space to see what we will finally have on our platters. I can assure you though they will be the best you will try this season. Happy Holidays!

We are two stay at home moms turned entrepreneurs who set up the Culture Slice homemade gourmet treats stall at Street Fairs. We have many angels in our lives who help make our dreams come true by running errands, taking care of our kids, packaging and labelling our products, carrying our stuff to the car, ferrying us to and back and most importantly funding our endeavours. These angels are also known as our husbands, children and other friends and family.

This is a toast to Shashank and Peter (our husbands), Ayaan, Ezra, Akemi and Sophie (our kids) and all other significant persons in our lives, whose palettes and patience are both tested in all of our experiments.

Thank you to all of you who came to visit us at our Union Square stall. We hope you enjoyed the samples that you would have tasted and those that you purchased.

While we have overcome the challenge of converting our love for cooking and sharing the joys of good food into a profession, our creativity continues to be challenged in deciding what new offerings to bring to the fairs. You could check out our previous products in our blog posts and please leave any feedback that you may have about our products. Also, let us know what else you would be interested in eating and we will get it out there!

Looking forward to hearing from you folks and also, to seeing you in the future.
